Indian Railways Planning to Introduce QR code-based Ticket Checking System

Looking at the surging COVID-19 cases in India, the national transporter, Indian Railways is planning on introducing a QR code-based ticket checking system. The announcement was made public by the North Central Railways which said that it has developed QR code-based contactless ticket checking system which is developed is being implemented on the “Pan India basis”.

The news was announced through the official twitter handle of North Central Railways.
“CRIS rolled out application covering all Zonal Railways to display reserved ticket details as QR code,” it tweeted out.


“On successful reserved ticket booking from anywhere, an SMS containing URL or QR code will be sent to the passenger’s mobile number. During entering the station or checking of the ticket, the passenger will click on the QR code or URL available and the QR code of the reserved ticket will be displayed on the passenger’s mobile browser,” the release read.

“The Railway Board has asked Zonal Railways to train and sensitize the ticket checking staff for early implementation of contactless ticket checking and scanning system,” the release noted.
The system has been developed in the Prayagrag division of the North Central Railways while the Moradabad division has already modified its ticket reservation system to QR code-based ticketing. These codes on tickets can be scanned through hand-held R-cade scanning devices.
